SON Destroys over 780 thousand USD (N300m) of sub-standard Gas Cylinders and Vehicle Tyres

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) recently destroyed more than 780 thousand USD (N300 million) worth of sub-standard gas cylinders and vehicle tyres that did not comply with the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS), making them publicly hazardous.

According to the Director-General, SON, Malam Farouk Salim, appointed in September 2020, the standards regulator increases its inspection and intelligence to monitor non-standard products' inflow. He reiterated the commitment of the agency to achieve its zero tolerance for non-standard goods.

"We are destroying these goods in an environmentally friendly way because we do not want to pollute the environment, and we also to ensure that everything recyclable would be recycled properly," Salim said.

"We are looking at N300 million worth of goods, and this is just an estimate. We are destroying them. About six containers of tyres were stuffed into each other, and for the cylinders, we intercepted them from multiple sources." Malam Farouk Salim added. The Director-General explained that there were still further products waiting for court orders to be destroyed.

Salim reportedly claimed that, with the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA), the agency is prepared to ensure that only products that fulfil the minimum quality criteria are permitted to enter the country from neighbouring African countries.
