Exporting Electrical Components to Nigeria

Navigating SONCAP Certification for Reliable and Secure Electrical Products

Electrical components are integral to modern life, powering homes, businesses, and industries. However, substandard electrical products pose significant risks to human life and the environment, leading to their classification as High-Risk/Life-Endangered Products by the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON). To ensure the safety and quality of these products, the SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) regulates their importation into Nigeria. Below, we outline key insights into exporting regulated electrical components under SONCAP certification.

What Are Electrical Components?

Electrical components refer to parts of an electric circuit, including wires, switches, distribution boxes, electrical cables, fuses, and other electrical parts. These products are critical to daily life but require stringent controls due to their potential hazards. Substandard components can lead to fires, electrocution, and environmental damage, emphasizing the importance of compliance with SONCAP standards.

SONCAP Certification for Electrical Components

SONCAP certification adheres to both the Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards to ensure product safety and reliability. Electrical products must undergo rigorous testing and certification processes before they can be exported to Nigeria.

Cotecna is approved by SON to issues Certificates of conformity for Electrical products The certification process varies based on the exporter’s shipment frequency and product registration status, with two main routes available:

Route A: For Unregistered Products (PCU)

  • Validity Period: Product Certificate (PC) is valid for 6 months.
  • Inspection Requirements: SONCAP certification is issued only after 100% loading inspection** during shipment loading.
  • Ideal for: Exporters shipping unregistered products or those with occasional shipments to Nigeria.

Route C: For Regular Shipments (PCL)

Validity Period: Product Certificate Licensing (PC(L)) is valid for 1 year.

Evaluation Process: Includes detailed product testing, factory audits, and **regular surveillance**.

-Ideal for: Manufacturers or exporters with frequent shipments to Nigeria.

Additional SONCAP Requirements

  • Regulated Products: All products exported to Nigeria are subject to SONCAP regulation except exempted categories such as food, drugs, and raw chemicals
  • Testing Standards: Electrical components must comply with IEC 60950-1 standards, ensuring safety and reliability
  • Nigeria-Specific Requirements: Products must meet specific requirements such as rated voltage (230V or 415V), frequency (50Hz), and plug configurations.

Why SONCAP Certification Matters

The certification process ensures that electrical components meet safety standards, reducing the risks of accidents and environmental hazards. By complying with SONCAP requirements, exporters can:

  • Protect human lives and the environment.
  • Build trust and credibility in the Nigerian market.
  • Avoid penalties or rejection of shipments at Nigerian ports.

Key Takeaways for Exporters

  • Electrical components are classified as high-risk products due to their potential hazards.
  • SONCAP certification is mandatory for exporting these products to Nigeria.
  • Choose Route A for occasional shipments and Route C for regular shipments.
  • Ensure compliance with NIS, IEC, and ISO standards to obtain the required Product Certificate.
