Exporting to Nigeria Made Easy with Cotecna

Identifying the Regulatory Documents Required for Export to Nigeria in easy steps

Exporting to Nigeria can be a profitable venture for many businesses, but it comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the most daunting tasks for new exporters is identifying the regulatory documents required for their shipments. However, the process has been made easy with these simple steps.

To start the Form M (Import Form) process for exporting to Nigeria, the importer must obtain:

  1. A proforma invoice from the exporter
  2. Local marine insurance
  3. A regulatory certificate/permit for the product(s)

It is also important to know the Harmonized Systems Code, HS Code for the product.

The HS Code is a globally recognized classification system used by customs authorities to identify products and assess duties, levies, and taxes. You can find the HS Code for your product using the link provided: https://trade.gov.ng/trade/help/tariff/search.do. Simply input the product name or HS Code and click “Search.”

Once you have obtained the HS Code, the required regulatory agency that you need to obtain the regulatory document(s) from is automatically indicated. For example, if you want to import trucks, you will input “Truck” in the search bar.

The system will generate the relevant HS codes and indicate that the item falls under SON, (as seen below).

As seen in the above diagram, it clearly indicates that the item – Trucks fall under SON, which means you need to obtain a Cotecna Product Certificate as Cotecna has been licensed by SON to issue Product and SONCAP Certificate for shipments into Nigeria.

Another easy way to identify the regulatory document required is when filling out the Form M on the Nigerian Trade Portal. Once the HS code is inputted, the required regulatory document is automatically populated.

As seen above in the highlighted text, the required regulatory document is populated once the HS code of the item has been inputted.

It is important to note that some items may require one or more regulatory agency documents. Therefore, it is crucial to consult with experts and ensure that all required documents are obtained before completing the Form M process.
