SONCAP Certification and SON Product Registration Differences Explained

Cotecna helps distinguish the difference between SONCAP Certification and the SON Product Registration.

For importers operating in Nigeria, understanding the distinction between Standard Organization of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Program (SONCAP) Certification and Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) Product Registration is crucial. These certifications are key to ensuring compliance with Nigerian import regulations. Confusing the two can lead to significant delays and complications.

To enforce the SONCAP program SON has authorized Independent Accredited Firms (IAF) like Cotecna to conduct the testing and inspection of goods needing the Product and SONCAP Certifications. Cotecna is authorized by SON to issue both Product Certificates and SONCAP Certifications under the SONCAP program. The SONCAP Certification is a mandatory requirement for SONCAP regulated products intended for import into Nigeria. This certification is issued in the country of origin and is a critical step that allows importers to open a Form M with authorized dealer banks, a prerequisite for customs clearance.

Steps to Obtain SONCAP Certification with Cotecna:

  1. Submission of Documents: Manufacturers or exporters must submit a Request for Certification (RFC), valid quality assurance documents, test reports, datasheets, and other relevant documentation to Cotecna.
  2. Review and Assessment: Cotecna reviews the submitted documents to ensure they meet the required standards.
  3. Testing and Inspection: Once the documents are approved, the Cotecna will inspect the shipment and collect samples for testing if required.
  4. Issuance of SONCAP Certificate: After successful testing and inspection, Cotecna issues the SONCAP Certificate, allowing the goods to be safely shipped to Nigeria.

Conversely, the SON Product Registration is a certification process conducted within Nigeria. This registration is essential for products to be legally sold in the Nigerian market, ensuring they are traceable and meet local standards. Importers must secure a product certificate before proceeding with the SON Product Registration.

Steps to Obtain SON Product Registration:

  1. Secure Product Certificate: Obtain the necessary product certificate.
  2. Initiate Registration: Importers must approach the state offices of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) or use the online registration portal to begin the registration process.
  3. Compliance and Verification: The products are verified by Cotecna for compliance with Nigerian standards.
  4. Issuance of Registration: SON issues the product registration, allowing the products to be sold legally in Nigeria.

By securing both the SONCAP Certification and the SON Product Registration, importers can navigate the complexities of Nigerian import regulations with greater ease. These certifications ensure that products meet both international and local standards, facilitating smoother customs clearance and legal sale in the Nigerian market.
